Tom Sherwood - Grade 6-8 Teacher
I recently joined the team at Boise Valley Adventist School here in the Idaho Conference in 2012. This exciting opportunity marks a return to the classroom after a brief hiatus as the K-12 recruiter for our conference. Here is a short sketch regarding my connection to Adventist education.
In 1985 after graduating with a degree in Theology from Walla Walla College, my employment for the Adventist denomination began as a pastor/teacher in the Nevade/Utah Conference. Working in this capacity in a small school setting for 3 years, allowed me to obtain my teaching credentials at La Sierra University during the summer. When the opportunity to work full time in the classroom became available, it was time to move to Susanville, CA to teach for 2 years again in the small school setting. In the spring of 1990, there was an opening at Tri-City Junior Academy in Pasco, WA working primarily with 7th and 8th graders, which turned out to be a fantastic journey for 17 years.
In 2007, I returned to the small school environment in Twin Falls, ID for 3 years before accepting the K-12 recruiter position in our conference.
My credo, which has served me well in the classroom, is to create an environment where students recognize it's a safe place to discover the rewards of learning while enhancing one's potential, setting goals and practicing towards mastery. When kids feel valued, they become stronger listeners and learners.
My wife and I were born in Minnesota and moved out west in 1976 where we accepted Christ and became Seventh-day Adventists. We have 2 children, Adriel and Phillip, a son-in-law Cameron Cook plus 2 delightful grandaughters (Cadence and Alayna) along with 2 Chinese Pugs (Elmer & IdaMay). In addition to working with children, I enjoy gardening, fishing, theological discussions and the applications they lend to life's journey into God's kingdom.
I invite you to visit my classroom to further explore the virtues your son/daughter may gain by attending BVAS. Come join us and rediscover the investment of sending your child(ren) to an Adventist Christian school.
